Natural & Lab-Grown
Both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are diamonds. Understanding how they form is a useful first step toward choosing a piece that feels right for you.
Where they begin
Natural diamonds form within the Earth. Laboratory-grown diamonds are made in controlled environments, commonly using high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD).
What they share
Laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. They are different from diamond simulants, such as cubic zirconia, which are different materials.
What a photograph cannot tell you
Sparkle or appearance alone cannot reliably establish a diamond’s origin. Specialized laboratory equipment can detect differences in growth characteristics. Read the origin disclosure and any accompanying laboratory report for the specific diamond.
Choosing your piece
Consider origin alongside the diamond’s appearance, size, setting and your budget. Check the individual product details; an educational photograph does not identify the origin or availability of a store product.
